Which is better – clamshell or blister packaging?

Clamshell and blister packaging are both similar types of display packaging and each method has pros and cons.

Clamshell packaging is pre moulded using a thermoforming process (where a plastic sheet is heated to a pliable forming temperature, formed to a specific shape in a mould, and trimmed) and can be specifically shaped to your product and also formed into a range of shapes for specific display objectives; for example, custom tri-fold clamshells that can sit on a shelf, stand in a display or hang on a peg rack.

Clamshell packs are better suited to high volume product packing as there is no processing bottleneck as dictated with blister packing, and can offer high levels of tamper-proofing, however product packaging with a clamshell pack does require expensive tooling.

Blister packing is produced by mechanically shrinking film over card and effectively sandwiching the product in-between. Blister packing is especially effective when the product dimensions and sizes vary because the blister film will naturally follow the contours of the product.  The backing cards offer an excellent cost-effective branding opportunity and are sufficiently durable for most lighter-weight products.

Both blister packaging and clamshell packaging can be manufactured with EIPPA approved materials.

Braille can be accommodated into any product packaging that is either produced in a moulding process or by a die cutting process.  Please be aware there are special tooling requirements for adding Braille to your packaging.
